Seahorses - Year 1 (VR)

Welcome to Class 1R's Page!

Here you will find a variety of fun and interesting things 1R have been up to in our learning.

School 23rd March

Our Topic this term is: How does your Garden Grow?

For this topic we will be focusing on Art, Music, Geography and ICT.

In Art we will be looking at two different sculptural artists, Lundi Kudo and Angela Schwer. We will be using clay to create our own floral sculpture after carefully designing, creating and printing with different materials.

In Geography we will be looking at different types of maps, creating our own map of the classroom and playground using different objects as representations. We will also be looking at natural and man-made items we find around us.

In Music we will be listening to a wide variety of musical styles, thinking about which we like and dislike. Looking at how to recreate different styles using everyday objects, our voices and musical instruments.

In ICT we will be creating a code for a BeeBot to following. Providing clear instructions that follow a pattern or sequence created by each child.

In maths, we have continued to build a strong knowledge of number by looking in detail at the numbers 0-10. This has helped the children understand the many ways to make other numbers.

Next we will be looking at addition and subtraction. Looking closely at what the + and - symbols mean and how to use them. The children will explore different ways to add numbers together and then use this knowledge to support them when subtracting.

In Literacy we will be using the book Jim and the Beanstalk. This will be used for a three week writing unit where the children will create their own story based on the focus book. We will begin by reading the story to the children, getting the children excited by using drama to retell a story, mapping out a story, adding actions, thinking about what a character might be thinking or feeling and then changing an element of the story, so the children can create their own amazing story!

The Star of the Week is …

We have finished our first class book! The children have voted and selected a new book: The Mystery of the Pantomime Cat written by Enid Blyton

I hope the children love this book as much as I do!

For our next class book we will be wrapping up the story and just selecting it from a blurb! We will listen to each blub, think about which story we would like and then vote. This book with the most votes will be our new class book!

If you have any suggestions for a class chapter book, please let me know :)

Brian Bear

In 1R, we have a teddy. This teddy is called Brian Bear and he will go home with a child who has been AMAZING in many different ways.

Brian Bear has a book which will come home as well. In this book please draw, write or add pictures of what you have done over the weekend with him.

Brian LOVES to listen to children read to him before bed, so please make sure you tuck him up and read a bedtime book to him.

Brian Bear is very special to me, so please do take care of him!

What the Jackdaw Saw

Our first video story of the year is a book that Julia Donaldson wrote alongside deaf children. It is read by Mr Newton and signed in British Sign Language by Mrs Rich.

If you are able to support children with their reading by coming into school and listening to children read, then please let me know. We are desperate for the help and would appreciate any time you or a family member could give to us! smiley

If you have any questions please feel free come in to speak to me.
